Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit dhyāna.
Etymology: < Sanskrit dhyāna meditation, thought, reflection < dhyā- to contemplate ( < dhī perception, insight) + -na , suffix forming abstract nouns. With sense 2 compare earlier Zen n. and Chan n.
1. In various religious and philosophical traditions originating in India: profound meditation; (as a count noun) a particular form of this.In Theravada Buddhism the related term jhana n. is typically used.
