Origin: Apparently a borrowing from an Indian language.

Etymology: Apparently < an Indian language.The immediate etymon has not been traced, but it probably reflects a Prakrit formation < a variant of ḍakk- to bite, sting, ḍakka bitten ( < the past participle of Sanskrit daṃś- to bite, sting; compare Prakrit ḍaṅka the stinger of a scorpion) + a reflex of Sanskrit -kāra maker ( < kṛ- to make: see karma n.); with the formation perhaps compare Sanskrit madhukāra, madhukara bee, lit. ‘honey-maker’. Compare Panjabi regional (western) ḍaṅg sting, Gujarati ḍãk large wasp, Hindi regional ḍakorī wasp. The origin of the i in the first syllable of the English word is unclear, and it may be based on an error. A form dangara is also given in some early lists of Indian-language names, but these lists do not specify a particular language. Compare the following earlier passage, although it is unclear whether this should be interpreted as showing the English word or a form in an Indian language (perhaps misheard or transliterated erroneously):1872 Trans. Zool. Soc. 7 184 The native name of this bee in the North-west Provinces is Dingār.
