Etymology: < scientific Latin Dicyema, genus name (R. A. von Kölliker 1849, in Berichte von der Königlichen Zootomischen Anstalt zu Würzburg 8 59) + -id suffix³. Compare French dicyemide (E. van Beneden 1876, in Bull. Acad. Royale de Belgique 41 1065), and scientific Latin Dicyemidae, family name (E. van Beneden, 1882) and Dicyemida, order name (R. A. von Kölliker, 1882).

Zoology.

Any microscopic worm of the rhombozoan group Dicyemida, having a complicated life cycle with two kinds of larvae. Also attributive.The Dicyemida have been treated as an order of the phylum Mesozoa or of the phylum Rhombozoa. The name is now frequently regarded as a preferred synonym of the phylum Rhombozoa.
