Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French dicteur.
Etymology: Apparently < Middle French dicteur, dictour, although this is recorded only in the meanings ‘author’, ‘arbiter’, and ‘dictator’ (13th cent. in Old French as diteor ; < dicter (see dictate v.) + -eor -or suffix, partly after classical Latin dictātor dictator n.).
Obsolete. rare.
