Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin dictērium.
Etymology: < classical Latin dictērium (or dīctērium) witty saying, bon mot, of uncertain origin; perhaps < dict- , past participial stem of dīcere to say (see dictum n.) + ancient Greek -τήριον , suffix forming nouns, or perhaps < Hellenistic Greek δεικτήριον place for showing, stage or room for a spectacle or exhibition ( < the stem of δείκνυναι to show (see deictic adj. and n.) + -τήριον, suffix forming nouns), although there is no obvious semantic connection (compare however Hellenistic Greek δεικτηριάς mime).
Obsolete. rare.
