Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin dictātōrius.
Etymology: < classical Latin dictātōrius of or belonging to a dictator < dictātor dictator n. + -ius , suffix forming adjectives. Compare Middle French dictatoire (a1359), Spanish dictatorio (15th cent.), Italian dittatorio (1521). Compare earlier dictatorial adj. N.E.D. (1895) gives only the pronunciation (di·ktătəri) /ˈdɪktətərɪ/.
= dictatorial adj. (in various senses).
