β. 1900s– dinosaurean.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Dinosauria , -an suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Dinosauria, group name (R. Owen 1842: see below; < ancient Greek δεινός fearful, terrible (see note) + σαῦρος (also σαύρα ) lizard (see saurus n.) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1) + -an suffix, after saurian adj., saurian n. Compare scientific Latin Deinotherium (1829), Dinotherium (1832: see dinotherium n.).R. Owen proposed scientific Latin Dinosauria as a group name in his Report on British Fossil Reptiles, published in April 1842:1842 R. Owen in Rep. 11th Meeting Brit. Assoc. Advancem. Sci. 1841 103 A distinct tribe or sub-order of Saurian Reptiles, for which I would propose the name of Dinosauria. Further etymology. Ancient Greek δεινός derives < the stem (possibly with an -σ- extension) of ancient Greek δείδειν to fear ( < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit dviṣ- to hate, Avestan duuaēšah enmity, hostility, and perhaps classical Latin dīrus dire adj.; ultimately < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin dis- dis- prefix) + -νός , suffix forming adjectives.
