Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a Dutch lexical item, and partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: devil n., milk n.1
Etymology: < the genitive of devil n. + milk n.1, after Dutch duivelsmelk (1554 in the passage translated in quot. 1578) and German Teufelsmilch (1533; also in the passage translated in quot. 1578).
Now historical and rare.
1. Either of two common spurges, petty spurge, Euphorbia peplus, and sun spurge, E. helioscopia; (also) the white latex contained in these plants, which can irritate the skin.
