Forms: 1700s– Amidah, 1800s– Ameedah, 1800s– Amida, 1800s– ʿAmidah, 1900s– ʿAmida.
Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew ʿamiḏāh, lit. ‘standing’ (frequent in both the Jerusalem and the Babylonian Talmud), use as noun of present participle of Hebrew ʿāmaḏa to stand.
Judaism.
A prayer forming a central part of the Jewish liturgy, consisting of a varying number of benedictions recited while the worshippers stand.
