Etymology: < (i) Middle French amict, amicte ecclesiastical amice (a1391), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin amictus loose upper garment, clothing, way of dressing, covering, drapery, in post-classical Latin also ecclesiastical vestment (9th cent.; frequently from 12th cent. in British sources) < amict- , past participial stem of amicīre to cover (with an outer garment), to clothe, dress (see amict v.) + -tus , suffix forming verbal nouns. Compare earlier amyt n., amice n.1
Now rare.
