Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: dicho- comb. form, -pterous comb. form.
Etymology: < dicho- comb. form + -pterous comb. form. In quot. 1883 at sense 2 perhaps after scientific Latin Dichoptera, genus name (1836 or earlier). Compare (in botanical use) scientific Latin dichopterus , former specific epithet of Astragalus austriacus (a1803 or earlier), so called with reference either to the two wings of the blossom (resembling those of a butterfly; compare wing n. 11c), or to the notched margins of these wings.
Entomology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
