Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a German lexical item, and partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: dicho- comb. form, -gamy comb. form.
Etymology: < dicho- comb. form + -gamy comb. form, after German Dichogamie ( C. K. Sprengel Das entdeckte Geheimnis der Natur (1793 ) 17) and scientific Latin Dichogamia (1793 in the same source).
Botany.
The maturation of the stamens and pistils of a hermaphrodite plant or flower at different times, preventing self-pollination.

1805 tr. K. L. Willdenow Princ. Bot. & Veg. Physiol. §289 314 Mr Sprengel..discovered two principal ways in which seeds are impregnated, to wit, Dichogamy [Ger. Dichogamie], (Dichogamia), and Homogamy, (Homogamia).
1862 C. Darwin in Life & Lett. (1887) III. 303 What old C. K. Sprengel called dichogamy and which is so frequent in truly hermaphrodite groups.
1904 A. B. Rendle Classif. Flowering Plants I. iv. 158 A very frequent means for preventing self-pollination is known as dichogamy.
1957 Bot. Rev. 23 140 One must be careful to determine whether the dichogamy described (or observed) for a species refers to the individual flower or to the individual organism.
2008 Jrnl. Torrey Bot. Soc. 135 306/1 There are no previous reports of dichogamy in the available literature on Convolvulaceae.
