Etymology: < -scope comb. form + -ic suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek -σκοπικός relating to watching (in e.g. μετεωροσκοπικός : see meteoroscopics n.) < ancient Greek -σκοπος watching (in e.g. μετεωροσκόπος stargazer (see meteoroscopist n.); < σκοπεῖν to look at: see -scopy comb. form) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare also post-classical Latin -scopicus (formations in which are found from the mid 17th cent., e.g. microscopicus microscopic adj.), and French -scopique, German -skopisch, Italian -scopico.Formations are found from the late 17th cent., e.g. baroscopic adj., microscopic adj., telescopic adj., thermoscopic adj., in early use frequently after Latin models; they become more common in the 19th cent.
