Etymology: < develop v. + -able suffix.In the specific uses in mathematics after French développable (1799 with reference to a curved surface, 1804 or earlier with reference to a function); with use as noun, compare French développable , feminine noun (1800 or earlier; short for surface développable ). With use in sense A. 3 compare French développable (similar uses of which are attested from 1809).

1. Geometry. Of a curved surface: capable of being mapped onto a plane surface in such a way that no distortion or discontinuities occur and so as to be analogous to an unfurling or flattening of the original surface or curve.
