Etymology: Old English (Kent) denn woodland pasture; possibly the same word as Old English denn habitation of a wild beast (den n.¹); compare Middle Dutch dann forest, haunt of wild beasts.An Old English word, revived by place-name scholars, which survives chiefly in place-names (see A. H. Smith Eng. Place-name Elements (1956) I. 129), as Halden, Tenterden, both in Kent.
