Etymology: < allay v.1 + -ment suffix. In some early uses perhaps < allay v.3 + -ment suffix, or influenced by association with allay v.3 (compare discussion of semantic overlap at allay v.1).Compare Middle French alaiement alloying, alloy (1326), variant of aloiement , alliement ( < allier ally v. + -ment -ment suffix).
The action or result of allaying something (in various senses of allay v.1); esp. subduing, assuaging, moderation. Also: an instance of this.
