Etymology: < modern French détour turning off, change of direction, in Old French destor, -tour, originally *destorn; < destorner now détourner turn away, < des-, Latin dis- + tourner to turn.
A turning or deviation from the direct road; a roundabout or circuitous way, course, or proceeding. In 18th cent. mostly figurative.
