Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin allantois.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin allantois (1556 or earlier), variant of allantoides (see allantoides n.), probably arising by interpretation of the latter form as a plural.
Embryology.
In amniotes: the fetal membrane that lies beneath the chorion, arising as a diverticulum from the hindgut of the embryo, and serving as a sac for the storage of urine and (with the chorion) as an organ of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange. Also: a fetal membrane of this kind.The allantois is vestigial in many mammals, including humans, but plays an important part in the development of the umbilical blood supply.
