Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Allamanda.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Allamanda, genus name ( Linnaeus Mantissa Plantarum (ed. 2, 1771) 146) < the name of J. N. S. Allamand , Swiss scientist who became a professor in Leiden + scientific Latin -a -a suffix1.In form alamander apparently by association with words in -er suffix1 and perhaps also with salamander n.
Any of various shrubs and lianas constituting the tropical American genus Allamanda (family Apocynaceae); esp. any of several cultivated varieties of A. cathartica, grown in gardens for their large funnel-shaped yellow flowers. Also (in form Allamanda): the genus itself.
