单词 allah
释义

Allahn.

Brit. /ˈalə/, /əˈlɑː/, U.S. /ˈɑlə/, /ˈælə/, /ɑˈlɑ/
Forms: 1600s Ala, 1600s–1700s Alha, 1600s–1700s Alla, 1700s– Allah.
Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Partly also a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Arabic allāh; Spanish Alá.
Etymology: < Arabic allāh, probably (with elision of the hamza and first vowel of the second element) < al-'ilāh < al the + 'ilāh god (cognate with Aramaic ĕlāh , Hebrew ĕlōăh (see Elohim n.)).It has alternatively been suggested that the Arabic word is a borrowing < Aramaic ĕlāha , the emphatic form of Aramaic ĕlāh ; however, this suggestion chiefly relies on cultural rather than linguistic arguments, and crucially fails to account for the geminated consonant of the Arabic word. In quot. 1612 via Spanish Alá (1348, originally as a Moorish war cry; 1605 in the passage translated). Compare French Allah (1704; instances of the Arabic name of God are attested in a French context from 1553 or earlier). The Arabic word is attested earlier in English contexts (in quot. ?a1425 as part of the shahada, the Muslim profession of faith); compare e.g.:?a1425 (c1400) Mandeville's Trav. (Titus C.xvi) (1919) 92 The Archiflamyn or the Flamyn, os oure Erchebisshopp or Bisshopp..seyth þus: La ellec olla syla Machomet rores alla.1584 R. Scot Discouerie Witchcraft xv. xxxiv. 558 The Arabians call him [sc. God] Alla.
