Etymology: < French designatif (c1400 in Middle French in two apparently isolated attestations, subsequently from 1611 (compare quot. 1611); now désignatif ) and its etymon post-classical Latin designativus significant, indicative (6th cent.) < classical Latin dēsignāt- , past participial stem of dēsignāre design v. + -īvus -ive suffix.
