Etymology: apparently < Old Norse djarfr ( < derfa-z) bold, daring, audacious, impudent: compare Old Swedish diarver, diærver, Swedish djerf, Danish diærv; cognate with Old Saxon derƀi, Old Frisian derfe; not recorded in Old English where the forms would be deorf, dierfe; compare deorrflike in Ormin.
