Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: demotic adj., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < demotic adj. + -ist suffix, after modern Greek δημοτικιστής (1893 or earlier). With the use denoting a specialist in ancient Egyptian, compare earlier Demotist n.
1. A person who uses, or advocates the use of, vernacular language or ordinary colloquial speech; spec. an advocate of using demotic Greek in writing as well as in speech and in formal contexts as well as informal.
