Etymology: < ancient Greek δῆμος common people (see demos n.) + sponge n.¹, after scientific Latin Demospongiae, class name ( W. J. Sollas 1885, in Ann. & Mag. Nat. Hist. 16 395), so named because it constitutes the great majority of sponges.In Sci. Proc. Royal Dublin Soc. 5 (1887) 112 Sollas derives scientific Latin Demospongiae from Greek δεμότηρος , an error for Hellenistic Greek δημότηρος common < ancient Greek δῆμος people (see demos n.) + -τηρος , comparative suffix (also used to express contrast: see other adj.).

Zoology.

Any of numerous sponges constituting the large class Demospongiae, with skeletons made of spongin fibres (with or without silica spicules).Demosponges first appeared in the late Precambrian and constitute the majority of living sponges.
