Etymology: < ancient Greek δῆμος people (see demos n.) + -philism comb. form.In later use (compare quots. 1893, 1990) usually after either Russian narodoljubie (1832 or earlier; < narod (see narod n.) + -o- -o- connective + -ljubie love of something (see love n.¹)) or (with a different suffix) narodoljubstvo (1869 or earlier). Compare Russian narodoljub and narodoljubec (both 1864 or earlier), both in sense ‘person who is well-disposed towards ordinary people’ (compare demophile n.). Compare Narodnism n.

The state or quality of being friendly or well-disposed towards ordinary people, esp. the mass of ordinary people collectively; advocacy of or support for the advancement of the interests or rights of the masses.
