The action, process, or fact of establishing the truth of a proposition or theory by reasoning or deduction or (in later use) by providing practical evidence in support of it; an instance of this; (Logic) an argument or sequence of propositions showing that a conclusion, theorem, etc., is a necessary consequence of axioms or previously accepted statements. In early use with the sense of proving something beyond doubt; later also with the weaker sense of providing evidence and argumentation to support a theory or claim.See also lineal demonstration at lineal adj. 1a.
