Etymology: < German depsid (Fischer & Freudenberg 1910, in Justus Liebig's Ann. d. Chem. CCCLXXII. 35), < Greek δέψειν to knead (see quot. 1910) + -ide suffix.
Chemistry.
Any of a group of organic compounds found principally in lichens (see quot. 1956).

Soc. 98 i. 266 It will no doubt be possible to prepare, by similar means, a large number of analogous substances from other hydroxybenzoic acids, and since many undoubtedly occur in nature, as, for example, tannin, it is considered advisable to classify them under the collective name depside (δέψειν tan).
1935 Chem. Abstr. 29 147 The remaining compds. of the orcinol group of Zopf have, in addn. to the depside linkage, a diphenyl ether linkage between the ortho OH groups with the consequent formation of a closed-ring structure. These compds. have been termed depsidones.
1956 E. H. Rodd Chem. Carbon Compounds III. xii. 784 Depsides are substances derived from two or more molecules of phenolcarboxylic acids by esterification of a carboxyl group of one molecule..with a hydroxyl group of a second.
1959 New Biol. 29 86 Nineteenth-century chemists investigated the lichen acids very thoroughly... They established that the acids are all either depsides, which are rather readily broken down by alkalis, or depsidones, which are not so broken down.
1967 M. E. Hale Biol. Lichens viii. 111 The depsides..make up the largest group of lichen substances.
