Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Democriticus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Democriticus (1516 in Erasmus; see also note) < classical Latin Dēmocritus Democritus (see Democritean adj.) + -icus -ic suffix. With sense 2 compare Democritical adj., and also Democrital adj., Democritean adj., Democritish adj.Democriticus also occurs as a former reading (e.g. in 16th-cent. editions) at Cicero Tusculan Disputations 1. 34 (as Democritici , masculine plural), where modern editions read Dēmocritiī , plural of Dēmocritius (see Democritean adj.).
1. That laughs in ridicule, scorn, or derision; mocking, jeering. Cf. Democritism n. 2. Obsolete.With reference to the practice of laughing habitually at the foolishness of people, which was attributed to Democritus in later classical, esp. Roman, philosophy (see, e.g., Seneca De ira ii. x.).
