Etymology: modern Latin, < Greek δεύτερος second + -ium suffix.
Chemistry.
One of the isotopes of hydrogen, differing from the commonest isotope in having a neutron as well as a proton in the nucleus and present to about 1 part in 6000 in naturally occurring hydrogen (elemental and combined); also called heavy hydrogen. Symbols 2H (also H2), D.
