Etymology: As noun < post-classical Latin alterativum health-giving medicine (13th cent.), use as noun of neuter of alterativus (see below); as adjective < post-classical Latin alterativus producing change (from 12th cent.; from 13th cent. in British sources), able to be changed (late 15th cent.) < alterat- , past participial stem of alterare alter v. + classical Latin -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French alteratif (13th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman (in medical use) as adjective; 1495 in an isolated attestation as noun, and subsequently from 1700; French altératif ), Spanish alterativo (late 14th cent. as adjective, late 15th cent. as noun in medical use), Italian alterativo , adjective (beginning of the 14th cent.).
