Etymology: < post-classical Latin -carpium (in e.g. pericarpium pericarpium n.²) < ancient Greek -κάρπιον (in περικάρπιον pericarpium n.²) < καρπός fruit (see carpo- comb. form²) + -ιον , neuter of -ιος , suffix forming adjectives. Compare scientific Latin -carpus (in e.g. akenocarpus achaenocarp n.), French -carpe . Compare -carpous comb. form.Earliest in the 18th cent. in the Latin borrowing pericarp n., which provided the model for further formations in sense 1 in the 19th cent. Formations in sense 2 are also found from the 19th cent.
