Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin dēlīrāmentum.
Etymology: < classical Latin dēlīrāmentum delusion (usually plural), in post-classical Latin also madness (4th cent.) < dēlīrāre delire v. + -mentum -ment suffix. Compare later delirement n.
rare after 17th cent.
Absurdity, delusion; an absurd, deluded, or irrational thought, remark, or action. Formerly also: †an irrational enthusiasm, a craze (obsolete). Cf. delirement n.In quot. 2012 translating a 16th-cent. Latin text.
