Etymology: < classical Latin delinquere (see delinque v.) + -ish suffix2 + -ment suffix, after e.g. blandishment n. Compare slightly later delinquish v.1Apparently re-formed in the early 20th cent.
Obsolete. rare after 17th cent.
An act or instance of delinquency; a crime, an offence; a failure to pay a debt or tax. Also as a mass noun.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Apparently partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: relinquishment n.; delinquish v.2, -ment suffix.
Etymology: Originally an alteration (with prefix substitution: see de- prefix) of relinquishment n.; in quot. 1603 intended as a malapropism. In later use apparently re-formed directly < delinquish v.2 + -ment suffix.
