Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin dēlēnīmentum.
Etymology: < classical Latin dēlēnīmentum ingratiating action, blandishment, enticement, soothing act, consolation < dēlēnīre (also dēlīnīre ) to soothe down, to soothe, mitigate, to soften (see deleniate v.) + -mentum -ment suffix.Compare French †deliniment (1679). The English form is after the classical Latin variant dēlīnīre of the parent verb.
Obsolete. rare.
A mitigation or alleviation.In quot. 1856 in a text which uses obscure, literary language for humorous effect.
