Etymology: < classical Latin dēfaenerāt-, past participial stem of dēfaenerāre (also dēfēnerāre) to bring to ruin, exhaust by usury ( < dē- de- prefix + faenus , fēnus interest, usury: see fenerate v.) + -ion suffix1.Blount (compare quot. 1656) gives a Latin form defoeneratio as the etymon, but this has not been traced.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
The action of borrowing or lending money at excessive rates of interest; usury.
