Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French defenderesse.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman defenderesse, Middle French deffenderesse (French défenderesse ) female defender or protector (mid 14th cent. or earlier), female defendant in a legal action or suit (beginning of the 15th cent.), feminine form corresponding to défendeur defender n. (see -ess suffix1). Compare defendrix n., and also earlier defensatrice n.In defendress of the faith after defender of the faith at defender n. Phrases.
Now rare.
