单词 ambonese
释义

Ambonesen.adj.

Brit. /ˌambə(ʊ)ˈniːz/, U.S. /ˌæmbəˈniz/
Inflections: Plural unchanged.
Forms: 1600s Amboyneze, 1600s– Amboynese, 1700s Amboineese, 1700s– Amboinese, 1800s– Ambonese, 1900s– Ambonnese.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: proper name Ambon , -ese suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Ambon (also †Amboina, †Amboyna; Indonesian Ambon ), one of the Molucca Islands, now part of Indonesia + -ese suffix, after Dutch (now rare) Amboinees, adjective and noun (1621 (as noun, denoting the people) or earlier; now usually Ambonees ). Compare amboyna n.English forms of the name of the island include Ambon (1555), †Ambona (1589), †Amboino (1594), †Amboyna (1598), †Amboina (1599), †Amboyne (1613), †Amboyno (1625), †Amboine (1693). Compare Italian †Ambon (1550 or earlier), †Ambueno (1551 or earlier), †Amboino (1554 or earlier), Portuguese †Amboino (1554 or earlier), Amboina (1605 or earlier; also †Amboyna ), French †Ambueno (1556 or earlier), †Amboino (1556 or earlier), †Amboine (1612 or earlier; also †Amboyne (1621 or earlier)), Spanish †Ambueno (1558 or earlier), Dutch †Amboyna (1598 in Linschoten, or earlier; also †Amboina ). Currently, the usual form of the place name in Dutch, Portuguese, French, Italian, Spanish, and other European languages is Ambon . The origin of the medial i or y in the early European-language forms of the place name is unclear. Perhaps the forms are after the spelling of the name in French; compare forms of the Ambueno type cited above, and also Old Javanese Ambwan (1365). With sense A. 1 compare slightly earlier (rare) Amboynian in the same sense:1606 Last E.-Indian Voy. sig. D2v Our comming was to seeke trade with them and the Amboynians.
