Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin amblyopia; French amblyopia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin amblyopia dimsightedness (5th cent.) < ancient Greek ἀμβλυωπία dimsightedness < ἀμβλυωπός dimsighted ( < ἀμβλύς dull, blunt (see amblygon n.) + ὠπ- , ὤψ eye, face: see -ops comb. form) + -ία -ia suffix1. Originally (in quot. ?1587) via Middle French amblyopia (see amblyopy n.). Compare later amblyopy n.
Ophthalmology.
Originally: impairment of vision of various kinds, esp. when occurring without obvious abnormality of the structures of the eye; an instance of this. In later use spec.: impairment of vision in one eye, occurring when there is a marked disparity in the images reaching the retina of each eye (cf. lazy eye n. (b) at lazy adj. and n. Additions).Amblyopia is most commonly associated with strabismus (squint).
