Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman amblure, Anglo-Norman and Middle French ambleüre (early 13th cent. in Old French in this sense; already in second half of the 12th cent. in sense ‘gait, deportment’; < post-classical Latin ambulatura act of pacing (4th cent.) < classical Latin ambulāt- , past participial stem of ambulāre ambulate v. + -ūra -ure suffix¹), perhaps with alteration of the ending for the purposes of rhyme (the word rhymes with yfere adv.).Compare Old Occitan ambladura (12th cent.).
