Etymology: noun of action < decrepitate v.: see -ation suffix. Also modern French (1742 in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), and probably in 16–17th cent. Latin.
The action of decrepitate v.: (a) the calcining of a salt or mineral until it ceases to crackle with the heat; (b) the crackling and disintegration of a salt or mineral when exposed to sudden heat.
