Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish despedida.
Etymology: < Spanish despedida farewell (15th cent.), use as noun of the feminine of the past participle of despedir (13th cent. or earlier) < de- (see de- prefix) + espedir ( < classical Latin expetere : see expetible adj.).
Chiefly Philippine English.
More fully despedida party. A social event honouring someone who is about to depart on a journey or leave an organization; a going-away party.
