/ˌambᵻˈsɒnɪks/, U.S. /ˌæmbəˈsɑnɪks/ A method of sound recording and reproduction used to create an accurate three-dimensional reproduction of sound.In ambisonics, audio is recorded using four cardioid microphones arranged together in a tetrahedron in order to capture sound from all directions. The output is then typically processed to produce four signals: one for each axis of three-dimensional space, and a further signal corresponding to the output from an omnidirectional microphone. These signals are then modified to make them compatible with a particular configuration of (four or more) loudspeakers.Although meeting with limited success initially, ambisonics received increased interest in the early twenty-first century as a means of incorporating realistic audio into virtual reality entertainment.
