单词 delft
释义

Delftn.

Brit. /dɛlft/, U.S. /dɛlft/
Forms: 1600s– Delft, 1700s Delpht, 1700s– Delf (now rare and nonstandard), 1700s– Delph (now rare and nonstandard). Also with lower-case initial. See also delph n.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Delft.
Etymology: < Dutch Delft, †Delf (Middle Dutch Delf), the name of a town in Holland which has been famous for its glazed earthenware since the 17th cent. The town's origins go back to the year 1071, when Godfrey IV, Duke of Lower Lorraine, established a feudal demesne on an elevated place and ordered that a canal be dug in order to prevent the nearby River Gantel from silting up. The town apparently took its name from this canal; Delf is attested as the name of both the canal and the town from the 12th cent. (the former is now called Oudedelft , literally ‘old canal or ditch’); the form Delft is attested for the name of the town from at least the 17th cent. Compare discussion at delf n.
