单词 ambilogy
释义

ambilogyn.

Brit. /amˈbɪlədʒi/, U.S. /æmˈbɪlədʒi/
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ambi- prefix, -logy comb. form.
Etymology: < ambi- prefix + -logy comb. form. Compare earlier amphilogy n. and later ambiloquy n.Blount (compare quot. 1656) derives ambilogy (and ambiloge , in the same sense) from a Latin form *ambilogium , but this is apparently not attested. In quot. 1973 rendering Arabic tawjīh in its specific sense ‘(in language and literature) ambiguity, double entendre’ ( < wajjaha ‘to send, to direct, to turn, to deflect’, ambiguity being taken as an instance of ‘deflection’ from the normal unequivocal usage of words).
Now rare.
