Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ambilaevus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ambilaevus (12th cent. in a British source; < classical Latin ambi- ambi- prefix + laevus left: see laevo- comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare ambisinistrous adj., and also ambidexter adj., ambidextrous adj.Post-classical Latin ambilaevus is often given as the equivalent or translation of ancient Greek ἀμϕαρίστερος in Aristophanes, in the same meaning.
Not able to use the right and left hands equally well; lacking dexterity, clumsy. Also figurative.
