Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili debe.
Etymology: < Swahili debe square tin container with a capacity of four gallons (also daba; plural madebe), probably ultimately < an Indian language (compare Hindi ḍabbā, ḍibbā pouch, small box, casket, tin or can (for preserving food), Bengali ḍābā large container (for feeding cattle)).In use as a unit of measurement sometimes with unchanged plural form.
East African.
A square tin container for liquids, holding approximately four gallons (about 20 litres); (also) a measure of capacity equal to the amount it takes to fill a debe.Debes are typically used for the transport and storage of fuel such as petrol or kerosene, but are often reused for other purposes.
