Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a German lexical item, and partly modelled on a Russian lexical item. Etymons: de- prefix, familiarization n.
Etymology: < de- prefix + familiarization n., partly after German Verfremdung (1936 in this sense; see Verfremdungseffekt n.), and partly after its model Russian ostranenie (V. B. Šklovskij, in Sbornik po teorii poètičeskogo jazyka (1917) II. 3–14; < o- , prefix forming verbs and nouns denoting process or completion + stran- , base of strannyj strange, unfamiliar + -enie , suffix forming nouns). Compare earlier Verfremdung n. at Verfremdungseffekt n. Derivatives, alienation n. 1c, and also estrangement n. Compare earlier defamiliarize v.
In literature and other forms of artistic production: the effect or technique of disrupting the reader's or audience's habitual perception of the world and making familiar elements in a text, play, etc., seem strange and fresh, esp. by means of drawing attention to the language or formal devices used. Later also more generally: the fact or process of rendering something unfamiliar.Often with reference to the literary theories of Russian formalism (see formalism n. 5a) or, in early use occasionally, the plays of Bertolt Brecht, in which context the usual term is now alienation (see alienation n. 1c).
