A name given to the berry or succulent fruit of several North American procumbent shrubs or herbs, esp. of Gaultheria procumbens (family Ericaceæ), commonly called Winter-green in U.S. Also of Vaccinium stamineum, also called Squaw Huckleberry, and Mitchella repens (family Cinchonaceæ), a creeping herb, widely distributed in America. The name is also sometimes applied to the plants themselves.
