Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek -ϕωνος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek -ϕωνος voiced (in πολύϕωνος polyphonous adj., κακόϕωνος cacophonous adj., etc.; < ϕωνή sound, voice: see -phone comb. form) + -ous suffix.First found in the 17th and 18th centuries in loanwords from ancient Greek, e.g. polyphonous adj., homophonous adj. Formations in English are found from the 19th cent.
Forming adjectives designating a sound, voice, or speech sound of the type specified by the first element; frequently corresponding to (usually earlier) nouns in -phony comb. form or -phone comb. form.
