Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin Algebar, denoting the star Rigel (1503 or earlier; apparently arising from a misapprehension of one of the Arabic names of this star, rijl al-jabbār ‘foot of the giant’; compare Rigel n.), and its etymon (ii) Arabic al-jabbār, denoting the constellation Orion < al the + jabbār giant, colossus, powerful person < the same Semitic base as Hebrew gāḇar to be strong, to be mighty.
